Office 2007 Word corrupted by Vista SP1

I recently ran into a major problem after installing Microsoft Vista’s SP1. Shortly after installing, I ran into a problem where Outlook 2007 would crash while closing. Furthermore, when starting Outlook 2007 I would regularly get Word crashing a couple of times on startup. I was getting similar errors to this in the event log:

Faulting application WINWORD.EXE, version 12.0.6308.5000, time stamp 0x47e547c5, faulting module mso.dll, version 12.0.6213.1000, time stamp 0x46eafebf, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0003aff6, process id 0x143c, application start time 0x01c8f1da11726a84.

Google searches resulted in pages giving suggestions such as removing the normal.dotm file, disabling addons, and griping about HP printers. None of these solutions either worked or applied.

I tried running Office 2007 Repair – nothing. I tried uninstalling, cleaning the registry using Glary Tools, and reinstalling office – still, nothing.

I tried running Office 2007 Diagnostics and it seemed to be working towards something, but then spit out a message about how I should adjust my privacy settings. Well, that’s when I found another problem. When I clicked on Word Options I could only access the popular menu. None of the others would work.

That caused me to start trying a different google search. I was able to find this page on cnet. One of the suggestions I found was to delete the following key from the registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice12.0WordData]

With nothing left to lose, I tried that. After deleting the registry entry, I did a courtesy reboot. Miracle of miracles, it worked! I could start and quit Word 2007 with no problems. I tried starting Outlook 2007, again no issues.

What installing SP1 for Vista caused this problem I don’t know. But, it is a widespread issue from what I’ve been reading. Microsoft should address this issue with something more then this KB article.

Has anyone else had this problem? Post your experiences in the comments.

  5. Yes – having same problem as of a few days ago. Brought the machine to a fragmented HALT – it couldn't do anything except run IE7/web browsers. On my backup machine right now while it is in for repair, and am thankful for this blog/post. Going to try it –

  11. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Thanks to you my Word 2007 is fixed. It was crazy. I ran several virus scanners and spyware terminators but with no results. It was just all of a sudden I could not open a document from a website into Word. Then Word started crashing when I tryed to close it. then the functionality in Word started to go peice by piece. Anyway it is working just fine now. Again Thank you!

  14. Thanks very much for all your work in tracking this down and posting this — it solved my problem!I too had this problem after installing SP1. But I believe it actually started happening after Office SP1, which was a few days after Vista SP1 was successfully installed without hurting anything. The behavior I saw was that Word would not open files by double-clicking on them. The program would open, but the file would not be displayed. If I then used the Open command, I could open a file. However, I could not use scroll bars, and all but the most basic options were disabled. When I closed Word, it would crash every time.I opened regedit and went to the key you described, but instead of deleting the whole folder I decided to try just deleting the Settings key, leaving the SettingsWordMail and Toolbars keys intact. Voila! Double clicking on files now opens them, I can scroll again, and Word does not crash on exit.Scott
