Times are tough. Financial institutions are failing, the dollar looks weak, and people keep saying the dreaded “R” word. It’s enough to make a person want to hide their money under a pillow, put up some sandbags, and weather the storm clutching tightly to every penny. That is exactly the wrong thing to do and I’m going to tell you why.

The last time we were in an official recession was 2001 to 2003. This is not an official recession. Even then, hiding in a bunker is not the way to do business. In fact, it’s a sure fire recipie for disaster. If you are not spreading the word about your business, people are going to forget about you. Sure, you can have a small handful of die hard customers who will keep doing business with you. But, the ability to attract new customers will be severely hampered.

Remember, “Don’t Panic!” The sky isn’t falling. Keep marketing. Keep doing what you do best and do it better then anyone else. Make sure everyone knows you are still in business and you are here to stay.

What else can you do? Spend more, and spend smarter! You would think that during a “recession” you should hold on to every penny you make. That’s just the opposite, you should ramp up your marketing budget. When others are cutting back, you can gain market share by being even more aggressive. Be sure to spend money on the strategies that will give you the best chance of return on investment. That’s where Open Sky Media can help.

When you are looking to maximize profits, it is always essential to maintain a healthy marketing program. It requires careful planning, decisive action, and a healthy dose of fearlessness. It is more important then you will ever know, that the money you spend on marketing matters if you intend to grow your business.

Ok, so now you know to not panic. You know that you need to be fearless in the face of adversity and keep marketing your business. Now it’s time to talk about your website. You have one right? You better. Your website can do a lot of the heavy lifting in promoting your business. I like to say that is a 24 hour 7 day a week salesperson pitching your business. It is NOT a do-it-yourself project. The best investment you can make in your business right now is a professionally done, search engine optimized, website. Done correctly, and marketed strategically, it can be the most valuable and productive marketing tool –Now more than ever during these economic times.

When considering how to handle your marketing, one of the things I recommend my clients is to develop a “unique selling proposition.” What sets you apart from the competition? You can’t always compete on price, but you can always compete on service. What do you do that separates you from the pack?

Finally, my best advice to you is be an optimist. Remember, “When strong winds blow, some hide behind walls, others build windmills.” Your competition will most likely be cutting back, now is the time to fill the vacuum left behind and be the one to be heard. Shout from the roof tops, “I am still here! I offer something that no one else does. Come to my shop!”
